Hilome Jose was born in 1947 in the town of Jeremie on the southwestern tip of Haiti. He moved to Port-au-Prince in the late 1960's and worked as a carpenter. Through a mutual friend, he made the acquaintance of the Haitian master Calixe Henry and began to paint. He is a journeyman knife painter with a distinctive style.
